On 16 November 1948 the Magistrates’ Court in Zwoleń, with Judge Łowicki presiding and with the participation of a reporter, Gwarek, interviewed the person mentioned hereunder as a witness. After advising the witness of the criminal liability for making false declarations and of the significance of the oath, the judge took an oath therefrom, following which the witness testified as follows:

I worked as a journeyman blacksmith at the blacksmith’s shop of Bronisław Śmietanka in the village of Stefanów. At the beginning of the harvest in 1942 – I don’t remember the date – a motor car drove up to Bronisław Śmietanka’s smithy, where Bronisław and I were working. Inside the vehicle were three German gendarmes (whom we didn’t recognize) and Bronisław’s brother, Józef Śmietanka. The gendarmes detained Bronisław Śmietanka and led him on foot, together with his brother Józef, in the direction of the village of Zamość. I drove away on my bicycle and, from a distance, heard the sound of two rifle shots. Later that day I learned that both Śmietanka brothers had been shot dead by the Germans at that very time. I went up to the execution site and saw their bodies. I don’t know the reasons for the execution.
