I was drafted into the army on 19 November 1940, into the anti-aircraft artillery in the town of Ivanovo, 250th Regiment.

We left for Moscow during the German-Soviet war. I was discharged from the army after 18 days of war, and sent to a work battalion in Gorky.

In Gorky, our work consisted in digging ditches and installing underground cables.

5. Social composition of POWs, prisoners, deportees:

It was the 996th battalion and it comprised only Poles and Germans – a total of 572 people. A lot of people died while digging the ditches and planting mines. While digging, they came across a mine that had not been cleared.
