My most important wartime experience

It was in 1944. When the Germans were retreating from Wisznice, a great fight ensued. Russian planes were flying overhead. People left their homes and hid in the woods. We spent the night in the forest for fear of getting beaten up. It was raining when we were in the woods.

When leaving Wisznice, the Germans took a lot of horses. Later people went looking for them, but they were nowhere to be found. When the Russians came, they also demanded horses, and if there were no horses, they took pork fat, vodka, anything. People hid everything they could.
