How I used to learn during the occupation

During the long years of the German occupation, I wasn’t able to devote much time to study. Constant changes in living conditions caused by resettlements created such a situation that learning in Polish was practically impossible.

It was only in mid-1941 when we were thrown out of Toruń and moved to Suchatówka, a small village near Toruń, that I began to study under my mother’s supervision. I mastered the material of the sixth grade of elementary school and the first grade of secondary school, using pre-war school books that I had managed to save.

After another resettlement and our return to Toruń, I studied English for four months. Then I was forced to take a break from my studies due to hard work from dawn to dusk and poor living conditions.
