My wartime experience

Throughout 1944, the Soviets were driving the Germans away. When the Soviets approached Wisznice, we fled to the colony, where we dug trenches. I was in a trench when we heard the first cannon shot. I saw planes fighting in the air. The battle with the Germans lasted until the evening. Upon leaving, the Germans burned down the barracks, the bell tower and a barn, and in the dead of the night, they blew up the bridge.

In the morning I got up, got dressed and went to Wisznice to see what was going on. When I arrived in the town, I saw the Soviets driving in their tanks [and] cars.

After lunch, we came back home. During the night, we could perfectly hear the gunfire. After the front had passed, we could hear the bombing every day.
