My most important wartime experience

On their return from Russia, the Germans went through Poland, destroying towns and villages and murdering their residents. We all escaped to the woods, taking our cows, pigs and horses, for which we built special enclosures in the forest.

As the enemy planes were flying over our forest, they fired their guns and dropped bombs. They killed a lot of people and [destroyed a lot of] property. Then the Germans came and stole many horses and pigs and killed a lot [of people]. When we went home in the morning, the buildings [were] burned down.
