My memories of German crimes

In 1943, I saw Russian prisoners of war being marched by the Germans. It was late autumn, it was sleeting and the street was muddy. The prisoners walked in fours, some barefoot; they wore trousers and shirts and were bareheaded, though some carried quilt or sack pieces on their backs.

They were unshaven, dirty and haggard. They were so hungry that when they found a cigarette butt in the gutter, they put it in their mouth and chewed it.

At the time, a farmer was passing by with turnip. The prisoners threw themselves at it, but the Germans wouldn’t let them eat, they started beating them and hurried them on.

This is but one illustration of the many millions of atrocities committed by the Germans.
